ABOUT Joan Stebbins:
WHO IS JONE STEBBINS? Depends on who you ask ...

Basically I am a hair styling, bass, guitar, ukulele and board game playing, multi-crafting, bowling, karaoke singing one woman show. I have been working in hair salons in the SF/ Bay Area since 1987. I also perform in the rock band called Imperial Teen.

As long as I can remember music and hair have been my passions. I love to take an idea and run with it, creating something new and different. My aesthetic is modern with a nod and wink to the retro. I work with all types of hair, specializing in longer lengths and glamourous updos.

At Experience Salon, we work with Bumble and Bumble, Rene Furterer and Aveda hair care and styling products. I also use Aveda haircolor because of its durability and the amazingly shiny results I achieve with it.

Hi Jone,
How often should I have my hair cut?
- Clueless about Cuts, Mill Valley, CA

Hey Clueless
I’ll just cut to the chase…you should get haircuts often enough to keep the ends healthy and your style cute! Hair grows on average 1/2 “ a month, but it doesn’t always grow evenly. Usually every 4-6 weeks for shorter styles and 6-8 weeks for longer hair.

Jone,
Help! I am losing a lot of hair. My brush and drain is full of it. Should I be concerned?
- Hairless in the Haight, San Francisco, CA

Dear Hairless One,
First off take a breath! It’s normal to lose 80-100 hairs a day. It may seem like you’re losing more hair if you haven’t been washing or brushing your hair often. Hormonal changes and stress can also affect hair loss. Scalp treatments and vitamins can help treat weak, thinning and hair loss problems. Let’s discuss your scalp treatment options next time you come in.

Dear Jone,
My hair frizzes out in the foggy weather.
How can I control it?
- Curly Sue, Sausalito, CA

Good question, Curly Sue. First off, don’t wash your hair everyday. Use a leave in conditioner and styling products with some silicone in them. That will coat the hair and protect it from humidity. The Bb curl crème works wonders.

Dear Jone,
My hair is going grey. I swim a lot. If I color my hair,
can I still swim in the pool?
- Joan, Point Richmond, CA

Yes, absolutely Joan, you can go in a pool, but bear in mind is that pools have chlorine (bleach) in them which, especially combined with sun (heat), can lighten your hair.  Use a bathing cap or at least get your hair wet before you get in the pool. This helps protect your hair from absorbing the chlorinated water and if you can leave some conditioner in it - do it! Always rinse your hair with clean water when you leave the pool. With a little attention and care you’ll soon be in the swim of things!
